  David Russell David Russell Image

After graduating from Syracuse University in 1972 David Russell found that he had a love for papermaking and its diverse applications. After twenty years of teaching in various, venues including Pratt Institute in New York, he decided to relocate his studios to upstate New York where he created the Earth Drum. This decorative percussion instrument is comprised of a handmade diaphragm of flax. The pulp used is made by an intricate process in which linen fabric is recycled into its original fiber stare, molded onto discs and finally wrapped around steel rings. A swirling pattern of hand- pigmented pulp is applied individually onto each drum guaranteeing their Solid Color Earthdrums Image uniqueness. The colors are created using Aqueous Dispersed Pigments so that each drum has individuality. You can play the earth drum with your fingers or with your hands. It can also be struck with a powerful blow of a soft mallet.
